Originally from Bourne in Lincolnshire, however I lived for most of my childhood and teenage years in Crowland a small town in the Fens. Following a relatively short career with Thomas Cook I decided to follow in my sisters footsteps and joined the Royal Air Force aged 18 with the intention of serving three years and then moving on to something else.
This was not to be the case. The opportunities and lifestyle that the Service provided resulted in me experiencing a long and thoroughly enjoyable career within the Air Traffic Control branch serving in Oxfordshire, Norfolk, Wiltshire and Scotland - an area where I spent the majority of my service life. During this time I learnt to ski, had a go at parachuting, sailed, learnt to rock climb and was part of several mountaineering expeditions which took me to the far corners of the world. I left the Royal Air Force at my 22 year point to care for my young daughter.
Following a five year career break I decided it was time to make myself employable again by gaining book keeping and accounting qualifications. This proved worthwhile as I was soon employed as a part-time book keeper for a Biodynamics company. Unfortunately, following a company reshuffle several positions were disestablished resulting in several members of staff, including myself, being made redundant. A month later I was employed as an accounts support assistant in the bursary at Oakham school on a temporary contract to cover maternity leave.
I am delighted to have been selected from the many applicants to become the Issues Assistant with the Families Federation and look forward to working with a great team and being a part of this valuable organisation.
I am married to Colin, a serving Officer in the Royal Air Force and we have one daughter Hannah who is now 10. Fortunately Hannah is as enthusiastic about the mountains as Colin and I are, so most of our spare time and holidays are spent clambering up a rock face or mountain somewhere in the UK or the Alps.
