You are here : The Federation / Our Evidence Report
During 2009 we ran a series of workshops on units. The purpose was to gather generic evidence on a wide range of topics to get an overview of the types of issues affecting serving personnel and their families and to get a balanced body of data.
We acknowledged that the questions were not scientific – they were not designed to be. Our primary aim was to ask the questions that others had not, or could not, based upon the fact that we had face-to-face interaction with our audiences and could therefore put the questions in context, explain why we were asking about particular topics and tell the audiences how we would use their evidence and present the information to those in a position to make a difference.
The evidence represents the opinions and perceptions of the audience on the day that they took part in the workshop. Nevertheless, it should be possible to identify trends which will inform policy-making.

The Federation have issued its first formal report of the interactive workshops results gathered during 2009 in April 10.
56,000 individual votes were secured which allowed the Federation to both report key themes and trends to those with influence as well as use the results to inform the future direction of the Federation’s’ work. The Federation is indebted to all those who took part and contributed to this important work.
Satisfaction levels amongst audiences were high, with the majority voting to show that they had enjoyed the workshops and would recommend them to others. This has encouraged the Federation to refine the workshops for a further season of evidence-gathering in 2010.
The evidence extracted from the database has already been used to inform policy debates on issues as varied as: the definition of family, the length of operational deployments and the all-important deliberations by the Armed Forces Pay Review Body (AFPRB).
The Federation team are confident that your evidence has a part to play in influencing the policy agenda. By sharing the results of this first season of workshops, the team intents to inform all those with an interest. The Under Secretary of State for Defence has specifically requested sight of the findings, as have the AFPRB and staff within Defence Estates (DE), the AMP Briefing Team and others. The Federation team hope personnel and their families will also find the results interesting.
