After a combined century of service to the RAF, Bob and Steve reflect on their military careers as they reach retirement
Bob Brown, Amey’s Area Authorised Person, and Steve Lay-Flurrie, who worked most recently as Detachment Commander have enjoyed working together at RAF Neatishead in Norfolk for 22 years and have now decided that the time is right to take retirement.
Bob began his career 55 years ago when he was an Aircraft engineer with the RAF, before becoming Chief Technical Officer where he worked on aircraft such as Hercules and Vulcans. After 22 years of service, Bob was able to transfer all the skills he learnt in the RAF over to the civilian industry, most recently Amey, where he has been responsible for electrical, mechanical and working at height tasks across East Anglia.
Steve, joined the Air Force 45 years ago as a telegraphist and had a range of different roles before relocating to RAF Neatishead in 1998, overseeing the downsizing of the base. He took on the role of Detachment Commander in 2012 which saw him fulfil a variety of RAF roles linked with ensuring the British air space is kept safe and secure.
Whilst many see retirement as an opportunity to relax, Bob has no plans to slow down. At 70 years old he is keen to continue his fundraising for the air ambulance by providing guided tours around the disused bunker at RAF Neatishead and is currently working on all the old plans and records held for the site to improve the visitor experience.

“Steve and I have become very close friends over the past 20 years, it’s been a privilege working with him and keeping him on the straight and narrow. The proudest thing for me is knowing that our work is keeping so many people safe.”
