More than 340 runners competed in the Royal Air Forces Association’s (RAF Association) annual Colour Chaos charity run at RAF Wittering at the weekend (Sunday, 09 September, 2018) raising over £5,500.
Participants battled through waves of florescent powder paint to navigate the 5km course round the Cambridgeshire RAF station.
Colour Chaos provides a unique opportunity for the general public and serving personnel to run, jog, dance or walk round an active RAF base – all the while being showered in a multitude of colours.
The event was organised to raise vital funds for the RAF Association’s welfare support work. Every £1 raised by runners will go towards projects that help members of the RAF family across the country. One of these is the Storybook Wings initiative, where serving parents record their children’s favourite bedtime stories before departing on active service. Once recorded, volunteer editors work their magic by adding sound effects and music to the story, to give it a really special feel.
The completed story is sent to the child in a personalised CD cover, or digitally, ready to listen to whenever they like. Every child also receives a special bravery medal with their recording.
Helen Tempest, Challenge Events Manager at the RAF Association, said:
“We would like to say a huge thank you to all the participants and volunteers who supported the event. It was a fantastic effort from everyone involved.
“The atmosphere was amazing and alight with colour on a sunny autumn afternoon.
She added: “Working with the RAF gives us a unique opportunity to arrange Colour Chaos fun runs at active RAF stations. They allow the public, as well as serving RAF personnel, a chance to participate in a family fun event at a really special location.”
