DIO Red Tape Challenge is a new housing feedback initiative launched for Service families

RAF personnel and families are being encouraged to share their experiences of Service Family Accommodation following the launch of the MOD’s new Red Tape Challenge.

The initiative aims to identify processes and administrative requirements that may be creating unnecessary barriers for those living in Service housing.

Feedback gathered will help inform future improvements and forms part of a wider package of housing commitments announced by Defence.

The Red Tape Challenge sits alongside a number of housing pledges linked to the Defence Housing Strategy, including greater involvement for families in the repair process, a new Code of Conduct for those delivering housing services and continued investment in modernising Service homes.

The RAF Families Federation welcomes efforts to gather direct feedback from those with lived experience of Service accommodation.

Following changes introduced over the last year in areas such as pet ownership, decorating homes and running a business from home, which were informed by family feedback, the Federation believes it is important that opportunities continue to exist for personnel and families to influence decisions affecting their daily lives.

Mark Hayhurst, Accommodation Policy Advisor at the RAF Families Federation said:

“We are pleased to see another opportunity for Service personnel and families to share their experiences of living in Service Family Accommodation and highlight processes that may be causing frustration or unnecessary bureaucracy.

“Where people take the time to provide honest feedback, it is important that their views are genuinely considered and lead to positive improvements where change is needed.

“We know that good quality housing remains a significant factor in the lived experience of Service life, and we will continue to listen to RAF personnel and families, raise issues on their behalf and advocate for practical improvements.”

The MOD has also announced plans to introduce a repairs sign-off pilot, allowing families greater involvement in confirming work has been completed to the expected standard before cases are closed.

RAF personnel and families wishing to take part in the Red Tape Challenge can submit feedback via the Defence Housing website.
