Tax-Free Childcare is a new government initiative which started being rolled out from early 2017, replacing the existing Childcare Voucher Scheme in April 2018. For eligible families, Tax-Free Childcare offers to cover 20% of childcare costs (up to £2,000 per child, per year), for children up to the age of 12.
It will replace the Employer Supported Childcare Scheme, sometimes also known as the Childcare Voucher Scheme.
The scheme will be open to almost two million families in the UK and will be delivered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
As well as full-time employees working for an employer, for the first time, it will cover you if you are:
- Self employed
- Working part time
- On maternity, paternity or adoption leave
- Starting your own business
The scheme will be available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Are you prepared for the changes to childcare vouchers?
If you sign up for childcare vouchers before April 2018 you can remain on the scheme, and will be able to choose which is more cost-effective for you and your family.
If you are not currently taking childcare vouchers, you should consider joining now to have the choice later when the changes occur.
