On Friday (20th March), the Chief of Defence Staff (General Sir Nick Carter) and the Perm Sec (Stephen Lovegrove ) wrote to all members of defence and highlighted the following regarding key workers in Defence:

“The topic on everyone’s minds today is the issue of supporting ‘Key Workers’ and how we prioritise our essential outputs. The Government has now issued early guidance on its Key Workers scheme. Initially this exercise will be focussed on the continued provision of schooling. Teams across Defence are being asked through the TLB management chain to identify quickly the individuals who are critical to delivering essential outputs.

Designating ‘Key Workers’ from across a large workforce is an inherently difficult and potentially awkward task. We need to keep the number as low as possible. It will not be about seniority.

We will issue further guidance where we can, but in the absence of that, exercise your judgement in line with the basic Government advice about staying at home.”
