A new facility aimed at reducing social isolation in junior ranks based at RAF Cosford has opened thanks to a grant from the RAF Benevolent Fund.
The recreation and welfare centre has been named The Apprentice and The Oak and includes a completely revamped environment, TVs and e-gaming area as well a flexible space for students and permanent staff. The project, completed in nine months, was supported by a grant of £110,000 from the Fund.
Paul Hughesdon, Director of Welfare and Policy, said:
“We know from our research into the needs of the serving RAF community that social isolation is one of the challenges single personnel face, living in the Mess away from family. The Fund exists to ensure no member of the RAF Family faces adversity alone and in supporting this project we have helped to provide a great space for airmen and women to meet and socialise.”
The centre, which is part of the Cosford Village, was also supported by the Nuffield Trust, Compass Group and RAF Apprenticeships Fund.
