Private housing options

House Keys

Are you looking to get a foot on the first rung of the property market? Here we explain the private housing options available to RAF personnel and RAF families.

Private housing options for RAF families

If you want to know about the private housing options available to you the Joint Service Housing Advice Office (JSHAO) is a good first step – they can provide information on civilian housing options available to Service personnel and their families.

Buying a property – mortgage

It is acknowledged that buying a house is one of the most expensive and stressful processes you will go through in your life. And, buying an apartment, flat or leasehold property significantly multiplies the difficulty factor. So, when you are looking at properties with a view to buy, it is important to thoroughly research the different types of property, the different types of mortgages, the best provider and seek the best professional advice that you could afford.

For RAF personnel and families the Forces Help to Buy scheme (FHTB) is a great way to get on the property ladder. The policy governing the FHTB scheme can be found in Chapter 12 of the JSP 464, detailing eligibility criteria and more.

Private Rental

If you are considering private rental a good place to start your search for a property is online – using websites and tool such as RightMove. There are also specialist military letting agents, such as OFF THE PATCH who were featured in the Autumn edition of Envoy.

If you are looking for a property in your local area, high street estates agents can offer useful advice and will have specialists on hand to guide you through the process. Additionally, often properties are still listed in the classified ads in local paper!
