Following a 26-year RAF flying career, former helicopter pilot Gavin Davey has been appointed as Area Director for the RAF Benevolent Fund, with responsibility for Scotland, Northern Ireland and North-East England.

Gavin, who lives in Perthshire, is well-known across the Scottish charity sector, having led two renowned Scottish charities, the Gannochy Trust and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance, along with being an experienced charity consultant.

During his RAF career Gavin flew Wessex, Puma and Chinook helicopters and served on 18, 33, 72 and 230 Squadrons. He has deployed on operations across the world and served as Chief of Staff of the RAF Chinook Force and Joint Helicopter Force in Iraq. Gavin was appointed OBE in 2004 for his contribution to military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On his appointment to the RAF’s leading welfare charity, he said:

“I am delighted to be joining a charity which sits at the heart of the RAF Family, with such a long legacy of supporting both serving and retired personnel and their families. And I’m joining at an exciting time – this year marks the Fund’s 100th anniversary. As well as celebrating 100 years of standing side by side with the RAF, we are launching a raft of new welfare initiatives to support today’s RAF Family.”

One such initiative is the introduction of National Wellbeing Breaks. These getaways are aimed at both current RAF personnel and veterans who need a break from the pressures of day-to-day life.

Having supported the RAF Family for the past 100 years, the Fund knows how stressful Service life can be. Deployment, separation and continuous moves can all add to pressures at work and home. To help, the RAF Benevolent Fund are offering subsidised breaks across the UK to serving personnel and their families, during the school holidays. The Fund are also offering group breaks for retired individuals and couples to join, including one at Perthshire beauty spot Crieff Hydro in June.

Last year, the RAF Benevolent Fund spent more than £21million supporting 53,000 members of the RAF Family. To find out more about the services on offer, including welfare breaks, log on to www.rafbf.org
