The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust (the Trust) is raising awareness of the unique challenges Service families can face when balancing family life with Service commitments.
The Removing Barriers to Family Life Programme is an exciting opportunity for Armed Forces charities and CICs, as well as Armed Forces units working with Service families, to access funding specifically to address this issue.
Service families often face many challenges linked to the unique lifestyle they lead. From separation to isolation, unfair disadvantages to a lack of understanding of the impact Service life can have on them as family members – removing these barriers to family life is vital. This family-focussed programme seeks to support all Service families, including young people from Service families, and the families and carers of veterans too.

Looking beyond the Service person
Melloney Poole, Chief Executive of the Trust said: “This vital pot of funding looks beyond the serving person to those who support them, follow them on postings and make many sacrifices that enable Service commitments to be met. Service families play a vital role and we encourage those supporting them to think about applying for funding to build upon the provision in place to help them overcome the challenges they may be facing.”
Funding available for great projects
The Removing Barriers to Family Life Programme has both medium and large grants available depending on the type of project applicants can deliver.
- Medium grants of between £30,000 and £100,000 are available for new and existing projects meeting a clear need identified by Forces families.
- Large grants of between £101,000 and £300,000 are available for sustainable projects that clearly show how they will have a transformative effect on their beneficiaries.
- There’s even a limited opportunity for really exceptional projects to apply for up to £500,000.
The Trust is encouraging anyone wishing to apply for a large grant to get their expressions of interest in by 18 July 2019. This is a two-step application process with successful applicants invited to complete a full application.
Those wishing to apply for a medium grant have until 12 September to apply.
