The Rowlands are an RAF family – Dad is a firefighter in the RAF, keeping fighter pilots safe. Mum Suzanne discovered Reading Force for daughters Katie and Sophie, now 10 and 14, and the family have participated since 2009, talking about the books they’re reading with Dad when he’s deployed away from home, sometimes for six months at a time.
The Reading Force FREE initiative is available to those serving, reservist, veteran, injured – as well as the divorced/separated partners and children of Forces personnel. Reading Force deliver books and scrapbooks directly to the homes of families who request them, and have been able to give military families a constructive activity throughout lockdown.
A Kingston University and Reading Force seminar to help trainee teachers and more experienced educators understand the needs of Armed Forces’ children as they progress through the school system has been hailed by a senior Government policy advisor.
