On Tuesday (13 Aug), young people from service families at RAF Coningsby spent the afternoon learning about the war graves located in Coningsby Cemetery.
Coningsby Cemetery contains 37 war graves, the majority are personnel who lost their lives whilst flying from the RAF station in World War Two.
Jessica Nugent, Station Youth Worker at RAF Coningsby said:
“The young people have had a very rewarding time today, finding out about some of the men who lie here, and carrying out some very light cleaning and tidying.”
Sally McGlone from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission was on hand to tell the stories of some of the men, including some from Canada, Australia, and the UK.
She added:
“This is a wonderful opportunity to draw attention to the CWGC graves here at Coningsby, and to give the children some understanding of the scale of sacrifice made during both world wars.”
The children were members of RAF Coningsby Airplay group, a youth support service funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund. Airplay provides a safe place to play for youngsters living on RAF stations, aged eight to 18, with youth workers provided by children’s charity Action for Children.
